For him, the harshness of the Vostok Settlement, the cold, the confinement, is nothing new. He essentially brought the same conditions with him from Earth, just with more red dust and less air.
That background is also where his particular calm comes from. Oleg is known to be street smart: he's the one who knows how to handle Lyudmila Vetrova when everyone else would rather stay quiet, and he's the one who, even in a tense moment, can find a line that gets the whole brigade laughing. His humor is coarse, often crude, and his off-color jokes regularly scandalize or amuse the brigade, depending on who's listening. But that lightness isn't shallow: Oleg knows exactly when to turn serious and when a joke is what everyone needs to get through the day.
